YRF Co-Sponsors Hidden Heroes Cities Event in San Diego
YRF's Family Caregiver Program Director Gina Harrow and YRF's Southern California Caregiver Coordinator Nikki Stephens both spoke at today's Hidden Heroes Cities Summit in San Diego. The Yellow Ribbon Fund co-sponsored the event which was presented in partnership with San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and the Southern Caregiver Resource Center. The Mayor presented an award to the Yellow Ribbon Fund for its support of military and veteran caregivers. The purpose of the summit is to gather caregivers to "explore methods to build hope and resiliency."
Hidden Heroes cities like San Diego are the result of efforts by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation working with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to pass a resolution last summer to encourage cities to increase resources for military and veteran caregivers.
Participants at today's summit were able to learn ways to cope with grief and loss, communication skills to advocate for themselves and their families, and how to plan and make decisions when their partner suffers from a traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress.
