Military service is not just a job; rather, it’s a way of life. Military life is characterized by discipline, camaraderie, and an unyielding commitment to serving the nation. Service members face grueling physical and emotional challenges, isolation from family and friends, along with the relentless stress of combat. Upon their return home, however, Veterans confront a different kind of battlefield as they reintegrate into civilian society. At YRF, we are therefore dedicated to providing support to our heroes and those who care for them. This month, we have specifically turned our attention to financial literacy as a key area of concern for Veteran families.
Fostering Financial Literacy for Families
Financial literacy is a skill that is fundamental to family life, even more so for Veteran and military families taking on caregiver roles. These families often live on fixed incomes while managing both medical needs and household finances, frequently without formal financial education. Things like budgeting, managing debt, building credit, investing, and planning for retirement can quickly become complex and are crucial to building a strong financial foundation.
Through YRF’s Keystone program, we are working to bridge that gap. We want to ensure that we are equipping military families and caregivers with what they need to thrive. To address the obstacles our families face, we recently began a formal partnership with M&T Bank, to deliver comprehensive financial literacy programs designed specifically for military families in our Keystone program. This initiative aims to provide the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate complex financial landscapes, ultimately improving the financial well-being of those who have given so much for their country.
Tailored Financial Education for Veteran Families
M&T Bank’s Money Mentor services offer a bespoke financial literacy program tailored to the needs of YRF’s Keystone families. The program includes:
- In-Person Workshops: Available in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. These workshops cover essential topics such as budgeting, understanding credit score reports, identity protection, mortgages, and retirement planning. These sessions provide hands-on, practical advice in a supportive, interactive environment.
- Online Education Sessions: For Keystone families located out of state or unable to attend in person, M&T Bank offers online financial education sessions. These sessions cover the same critical topics, ensuring that all members have access to the knowledge they need, regardless of their location.
A Brighter Future
Ultimately, financial literacy is more than just understanding numbers; it’s about building confidence and resilience in managing personal finances. By offering Veterans and their caregivers the skills and knowledge necessary to make informed financial decisions, programs like Keystone and supporters like M&T Bank will ultimately foster long-term stability for Veteran families.
